Robust Decisions, Inc., is putting the Six Sigma into Design For Six Sigma (DFSS). Developed in the 1990s and still an emerging process, DFSS is a compilation of process best practices that can be applied in product design, manufacturing or services. Robust Decisions, with its patented Bayesian Team Support™ (BTS™) methods and tools, provides decision support solutions that enable rapid DFSS processes, even when there is incomplete information or uncertainty. Supported by Robust Decision's Accord™ software, DFSS decisions can be reached by effectively collecting evidence, weighing uncertainty and mapping supporting or contrary alternatives. Accord is the first commercial decision-making software tool that uses artificial intelligence to help teams reach decisions, allowing DFSS to be more effectively utilized in product development processes.

DFSS grew out of traditional Six Sigma quality processes for manufacturing. Six Sigma uses statistical methods to account for and manage product uncertainty and variation. Utilization of the Six Sigma process has improved the overall quality of manufactured products. However, quality truly begins in the concept and design of products, processes and services. Recognizing this, the Six Sigma community began to push quality processes earlier in the product lifecycle, evolving Design For Six Sigma concepts.

Unlike Six Sigma, DFSS does not follow universally recognized or defined steps throughout the design process. Partly this is because of limitations with the methodologies employed to date. Historically, DFSS has utilized Pugh's method or decision matrices to support decision making, however, these methods do not allow for uncertainty and cannot manage input from distributed teams, two aspects that are inherent in almost all processes across the enterprise. In addition, Pugh's method will not calculate decision risk or advise users what to do next in the process.

Regardless of whether DFSS is utilized to develop a product, service or process, the first steps focus on establishing the appropriate criteria and selecting the best concept to develop. A key objective of DFSS is the development and optimization of new solutions while dealing effectively with the challenges of managing uncertainty throughout the decision-making processes inherent in product design and development.

The Robust Decisions' DFSS Solution

The Robust Decisions solution resolves the problems that are inherent with current DFSS approaches based on Pugh's matrix-decision-based methods. Robust Decisions can effectively help you reach a decision with incomplete information, manage input from multiple or dispersed teams, calculate risk and give advice on what comes next. The BTS methodology backed with the strength of Accord software toolset:

  • Allows complex decisions to be quickly assessed and resolved with an easy to learn and use interface
  • Manages uncertain, incomplete or conflicting information—common in nearly every organizational process
  • Supports a combination of qualitative and quantitative data, which often can be difficult to manage
  • Accepts input from distributed teams, allowing all players across the enterprise to be heard
  • Advises users what to do next, analyzes the decision risk and provides other decision metrics to help you reach a robust decision

Much like Six Sigma was intended to be, Robust Decisions allows users to utilize structured and efficient uncertainty management and decision-making processes, yielding confidence in final decisions. This solution allows for more rapid processes with input and buy-in from all stakeholders. Over time, decisions and processes can be recorded, justified and reused, eliminating the need to revisit design or production decisions repeatedly. Alternatives and criteria are understood and accepted and all available expertise can be included and fully utilized at any step in the product lifecycle.
