The need to make good decisions is never-ending in effective technology and business organizations. To manage these, there are decision-making tools and techniques that improve the chance of making good, robust decisions. The list in the sidebar itemizes the challenges common to decision making. Of course, the overall goal is to choose the best possible option, but the other challenges are also of critical importance. Robust Decisions Inc. takes the position that virtually all information on which decisions are made is uncertain and subject to different interpretations. Most decision-making tools and techniques ignore this and the results are thus questionable. For example, say you have three options to choose among:
Information about the first option is very certain, information about the second option has some uncertainty and the third is highly uncertain. In fact, some features of each option may be more uncertain than others. Further, each person on the decision-making team may have a different opinion or interpretation of the information available. In spite of these differences, we would like to develop buy-in from the stakeholders and accountability from the decision-making team. Finally, in most situations the information is evolving—as more is learned the evaluation of the alternatives changes. Methods developed by Robust Decisions are based on managing this uncertainty and inconsistent interpretations. One study showed that many failed decisions use a poor decision-making strategy. The methods developed by Robust Decisions included in the Accord suite of tools and in the book Making Robust Decisions: Decision Management for Technical, Business, and Service Teams all encourage a sound strategy. The methods also help in understanding the risks involved in the decisions and what to do next to lower them. There is much involved in making a good, robust decision. There are many decision-making tools and techniques provided by Robust Decisions that can help ensure the quality of your decisions. |
